Rick Hinderer General Information

Guarantee

All RICK HINDERER KNIVES products are guaranteed against material defects and workmanship, and they carry a life time warranty. Our guarantee is void if the knife has been abused beyond normal wear and tear, or used beyond what are considered normal parameters for the tool.  If you do have a problem with your knife, it will be left up to us whether to repair or replace damaged or defective items.

Warranty

All RICK HINDERER KNIVES products carry a limited warranty for the serviceable lifetime of the product. We guarantee our knives, pens and tools against manufacturing defects in materials, construction and to perform as advertised when maintained and used properly.  Our Warranty does not cover normal signs of wear, rust, damage or breakage due to improper use, improper modification, or lack of maintenance.  We cannot cover lost fasteners or hardware under warranty, but we do sell those parts. Any product we determine to be defective will be repaired or replaced at our discretion. To receive warranty repair or replacement, the owner must send the product to us to be evaluated.  No other warranties are implied or expressed other than what is specifically stated here.

User modifications to folding knives that are not covered under warranty:  Modifying or altering the detent in the blade or lockside, the lockface itself, the blade tang, thumbstud, and lockbar cutout.  If modifications like these are performed on your knife they can ruin the lock up and or action of your folding knife.  These modifications could render the knife unsafe.

3rd Party Anodizing:  We cannot warranty a knife that has been heat anodized with a torch.  HOWEVER we will not void your warranty for using DC current to electro-anodize your titanium parts.

Using Aftermarket Fasteners and Parts:  You are welcome to change your knife hardware without voiding your warranty.  Example:  Titanium clip screws are a common upgrade, installing a set would not void your warranty.  The only case that would cause a warranty issue would be using improper hardware that would cause an issue with the knife that otherwise would not be there if you had the stock Hinderer parts installed.

Bevel Re-Grinds:  If you have your bevels reground by someone else we will not void your warranty unless the grind has a direct impact on the problem with your knife.  For instance if you had someone grind the tang to change the lock up and a problem with the lock occurred, there would be a cost associated to fix the problem caused by someone else.

If we determine that it is something other than a defect in workmanship or materials, we will inform you if the product can be repaired and your cost. If your knife has been abused or has seen hard use for a long period of time, it is possible that the useful life of the product has been exceeded.

***A side note for those of you who can’t flip your knife open to your liking, this is not a warranty or service issue. There are plenty of threads on the subject in our online forums at bladeforums.com  and usualsuspects.net  as well as youtube videos that can help you. Oil, pivot adjustments, and technique is where you will find your answers….The same goes for blade centering, lots of threads and info on the forums to help you out

Services

Not Offered

  • We will not change the original finish, so for example we won’t tumble a knife that was originally blasted
  • We do not do “custom” detent work, meaning we do not make detents lighter or stiffer, all folders are made to a certain spec, however it may not be absolutely perfect for “you”.  An example would be for those of you that have trouble flipping your knife without using wrist, we do not stiffen detents.  Or in the case of someone who finds the detent too stiff, we do not lighten them either.
  • We do not change or alter the lock bar engagement.
  • We do not do regrinds of any sort
  • We do not mark blade steel types after the knife has left the shop
  • We do not have a stripped screw removal service. Big boy rules apply, you strip it, you remove it.
  • We do not re-finish, or re-coat DLC Coated knives or knife parts

Offered

  • Spa Treatment: We will clean up, sharpen your knife and replace bearings or washers and return ship. $25
  • Sharpening and return shipping $15
  • Non-Warranty Service: If your knife is needing new parts or a tune up from normal wear, submit a service form using the “General Info” link below and located at the bottom of that page. Someone from our team will review the request and respond with instructions or request additional information to provide the best service possible. We typically send a PayPal invoice once the service has been completed to cover the service, parts and return shipping.
  • Replacement production hardware is available upon request to replace your stripped or lost hardware. We do not, however, remove any stripped hardware.
  • Reblades are offered, but if it is a non warranty issue there will be a fee and lead times.

Parts

We do sell the following knife hardware – handle screws, clip screws, pivot screws, pivot washers, and filler tabs.

We DO NOT sell: Folding knife blades, locksides, liners, pivots, stop pins, thumbstuds,  standard titanium pocket clips or handle nuts. If your knife requires one of these parts contact us for service.

Knife Care

Minimal care is all that is required to insure the maximum potential from your knife. Cleaning your knife periodically along with lubrication with a light oil is all that is needed, especially after exposure to salt water or an acidic environment.

We use premium stainless cutlery steels in all of our knives. Stainless steel provides outstanding edge retention and corrosion resistance, but can rust if not cared for. It is possible for rust to form when your knife is used in or around salt water, exposed to moisture, or simply neglected. If exposed to salt water, thoroughly rinse the knife with fresh water, and then dry completely and apply a light coat of oil to all steel parts.
It is a good idea to regularly inspect the interior of the knife for dirt and grime. Clean inside the handle with a Q-Tip and water with a small amount of detergent or mild soap. Rinse everything thoroughly, dry the knife inside and out and oil all of the steel components. A couple drops of lubricant around the pivot will slick up the action nicely.

Sharpening

A sharp knife is a happy knife, and sharp knives makes cutting safer and easier. You should maintain your knifes edge regularly, the more it is used and the duller the edge becomes the more difficult it is to sharpen. We do not promote one particular method or sharpening system, but there are numerous available.
We do offer sharpening as a service, the cost is $15 and that includes return shipping in the USA, please use our warranty/service form to send in your knife for sharpening.

Knockoff / Counterfeit / Fakes

RICK HINDERER KNIVES designs are increasingly being copied by unscrupulous foreign manufacturers and we feel we have a major role in protecting our customers from knockoffs.

Counterfeit products strangle innovation, create unfair competition, they do economic harm to businesses, and of course they mislead consumers into purchasing poorly made, cheaply priced fakes. These substandard built products, especially knives can be a safety hazard. We will use all legal means to hold those accountable who manufacture, distribute and /or sell counterfeit RICK HINDERER KNIVES products.
